Garda Speed Enforcement Zone, SEZ, Safety Cameras, GoSafe

Garda Mobile Safety Cameras, Garda Speed Enforcement Zones

First introduced on 15/11/2010, an additional 243 new Garda mobile safety camera zones have been introduced giving a total of 727 sections of Irish roads identified as speed enforcement zones.

The purpose of these zones is to reduce the instances of excessive speed which is a significant contributory factor in road traffic accidents and deaths on Irish roads.

An Garda Síochána primarily focus speed enforcement in these zones using:
- laser guns
- speed detection equipment in marked and unmarked vehicles
- Garda operated speed enforcement vans
- high visibility third party operated 'GoSafe' speed camera vans

The 'GoSafe' vans that people would be most familiar with provide a minimum of 6,000 enforcement hours per month. There is also a set of unmarked vans which provide a maximum of 1,475 hours per month that observe and record speed which is used for survey purposes only.

An Garda Síochána want people to familiarise themselves with these zones. In fairness, road falities have decreased since their introduction however, arguably, there are certain speed zones which when combined with inappropriate speed limits become no more than a revenue generating exercise.
