About The Kiltartan Gregory Museum

The Kiltartan Gregory Museum is located at Kiltartan Cross in Gort, Co. Galway.

The museum is largely devoted to the works of Lady Augusta Gregory. The building itself was orginally a national school built in 1892 by Lady Gregory's husband Sir William.

Lady Gregory was a founder of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and lived at Coole Park. During her time there Coole became a meeting place for writers, chief among them WB Yeats a life-long friend, artists, actors, statesmen, Irish language enthusiasts, folklorists and musicians.

She wrote a number of plays, was deeply interested in Irish folklore and set up a local branch of the Gaelic League in the building in 1899. She is also credited with reviving interest in the works of the blind poet Rafferty.
