About The Blasket Centre

The Blasket Centre in Dunquin, Co. Kerry.

The Blasket Centre celebrates the story of the Blasket Islanders, the unique literary achievements of the island writers and their native language, culture and tradition. The Great Blasket island was inhabitated up until November 1953 by a Irish-speaking population when the last remaining residents left for the mainland. Literary figures from the island include Tomás Ó Criomthain, Peig Sayers (responisble for much misery among Irish students who had to study her novel, Peig, during the 1970s and 80s) and Muiris Ó Súilleabháin.
