About The Anthenaeum

The Anthenaeum is located at Castle Street in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford.

Orignally incorporating a town hall and a theatre, the Classical-style Athenaeum was built in 1892 by Michael Lynch to designs by Joseph Kelly Freeman from Dublin. During the 1916 Easter Rising in Enniscorthy the Athenaeum was used as the headquarters of the Republic Irish Forces.

Many notable people have appeared on the Athenaeum stage, including John McCormack, the celebrated Irish tenor sang, Dr. Douglas Hyde, then President of the Gealic league, addressed a large audience in 1901, Padraig Pearse, Michael Macliammoir and Hilton Edwards.
