About Scattery Island

Scattery Island in Kilrush, Co. Clare.

St. Senan founded a monastery on the island in the 6th century but it was largely destroyed by the Vikings during the 9th and 10th centuries and later by the Tudors. Scattery was also used by the Spanish Armada as a safe harbour and as a defense outpost by the English.

There are the remains of an oratory, house, seven churches/chapels, a round tower and a holy well on the island.

There is an interpretative centre at Merchants Quay, Kilrush.
