About Saint Mary's Church

Saint Mary's Church in Gowran, Co. Kilkenny.

This is a Church of Ireland church built in 1871 which includes the fabric of a medieval abbey founded c. 1225. It became a "collegiate church" in 1312 founded by Edmund Butler. The original abbey was a large and elaborate structure with a long chancel and is distinguished by high quality sculpture and stone masonry. During the middle ages a massive tower was inserted between the nave and chancel, and in the 1870s, Thomas Henry Wyatt (1807-80) designed a Gothic Revival single-cell church that incorporated the tower.
