Born London, 25th June 1870, and educated at Haileybury and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was Clerk in the House of Commons 1895-1910. He resigned from the House of Commons in 1910 to devote himself to political work.

In July 1914 he sailed into Howth, Co. Dublin, in the Asgard with arms from Germany for the Irish volunteers. In the belief that the Allies would support the claims of Irish nationality, Childers joined the British navy on the outbreak of the First World War and won the Distinguished Service Cross.

Settling in Dublin in 1919, he was elected to Dail Eireann as member for Co Wicklow in 1921, appointed Minister for Propaganda, and served as principal secretary to the Irish delegation in the Treaty negotiations of 1921.

He opposed he Treaty, joined the republican side in the Civil War, and was captured by Free State forces at Glendalough House.

Court-martialled and sentenced to death, he was shot on the 24th November 1922, having first shaken hands with each member of the firing squad.
