About Ratass Church

Ratass Church in Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Ratass Church is the oldest building in Tralee. It was one of the first ecclesiatic settlements established under the Irish Church Government in Kerry. Unusually the church was made of stone, most were wooden structures so few remain.

The nave of the church is the oldest part, the chancel was added in the 12th century. The church was restored in the early 18th century. The principal feature of the church is the west doorway which is flat-headed and surrounded by an acrchitrave. On the east wall there is a Romanesque round-headed window. Inside the church is an Ogham stone and cross-slab.
