Michael Collins in (1890 - 1922) Revolutionary Leader..

Born 16th October 1890 at Woodfield, Clonakilty, Co. Cork, son of a small farmer, he was educated at Clonakilty NS.

Joined the IRB in London and came to Dublin to fight in the GPO in the 1916 Rising.

Imprisoned until December 1916 and on release became prominent in Sinn Fein and Volunteer movements and a member of the Supreme Council of the IRB, a position of considerable power.

Made Minister of Home Affairs and later Minister of Finance, also director of organization and intelligence for the Volunteers. A member of the delegation that negotiated the Anglo-Irish Treaty of the 6th December 1921 he became chairman of the Provisional Government formed to implement it.

After the outbreak of the Civil War in June 1922 he became Commander-in-Chief of the government forces. On 22nd August 1922, at an ambush at Beal na mBlatha, near Macroom, Co. Cork, he was shot in the head and died almost immediately.
