About Grace's Castle

Grace's Castle is located at Kilkenny City Courthouse, Parliament Street in Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny.

Built on the site of the former medieval Grace's Castle from 1210, fragments of which still survive in the basement level, this building has been Kilkenny's Courthouse since the 18th century. Previously a gaol it was converted to use as a courthouse in 1792 to designs thought to have been prepared by Sir Jerome Fitzpatrick who was infulenced by James Gandon's Waterford City Courthouse built in 1784. It was later externsively redeveloped in the early nineteenth century to designs by William Robertson (1770-1850).
