Church of the Immaculate Conception

Roman Catholic Church

The architectural form and design of the Church of the Immaculate Conception are typical in many ways of church design in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The articulation of each section of the church into separate blocks is a feature of this era. The tower, box side aisles and sacristy are clearly identifiable forms from the exterior of the building. The treatment of the ashlar masonry is representative of this time, with the roughly dressed limestone walls contrasting with the ashlar limestone dressings, adding textural variation to the site. The bellcote, stained glass windows to rear elevation, carved plaque with Celtic cross motif and the round headed window openings and niches mirrored by arcading to the building's interior add artistic interest. The rubblestone boundary wall to front of site complements the church's setting.
