Church of Saint Salvator

Church of Ireland Church with adjoining graveyard

A freestanding double-height gable-fronted stone Plantation Church of Ireland church with Gothic Revival detailing, built 1670, rebuilt 1763, remodelled and enlarged c. 1880 to designs by Sir John Leslie of Castle Leslie, Glaslough (1).

St Salvator's is an estate church set well within the scenically landscaped grounds of a seventeenth-century Plantation house and demesne, which has been owned by the Leslie family since 1665. Set within the demesne as a component part of a group of buildings, the church displays fine masonry from various periods, well-carved and lettered plaques and stones, artistic slate hangings and stained-glass windows, and the exceptionally tall five-stage seventeenth-century tower, likely heightened in the eighteenth-century, with added nineteenth-century buttresses is an impressive construction achievement that serves as a landmark in its lakeside setting.
