Church of Saint Patrick

Roman Catholic Church with adjoining graveyard

A freestanding double-height stone gable-fronted Roman Catholic Church with Gothic Revival detailing, dated 1811, that has an interesting subsequent history of remodellings. The Pre-Emancipation Era church was heightened around 1860 with earlier windows blocked and the present lancets inserted. The south gable was also added at this point but the unremarkable statue is likely twentieth century. Of particular interest is the varying levels of masonry craftsmanship. The exposed sections of the east elevation are rubble while the south elevation is finely squared-and-tooled, which possibly indicates that the church when first remodelled was principally accessed by the path and gates to the west, and that the present N2 Dublin Road is later than the church. The modern single-pitched east aisle extension is a sympathetic design that complements the present principal elevation. The church has a number of ties to America as evidenced by much of the stained-glass, which is sponsored by and memorialises individuals from America.
