Church of Saint Dympna

Roman Catholic Church

Romanesque Revival-style stone double-height Roman Catholic church, rebuilt 1923 - 1926 to designs by the noted architect and engineer Rudolf Maximilian Butler (1872 - 1943), then of 23 Kildare Street, Dublin, incorporating an earlier chapel dated 1784, which was subsequently remodelled c.1840. Reputedly the second oldest Roman Catholic chapel in the county and prominently sited, the church consists of three phases that reflect periods of Catholic building: the original 1784 T-shaped chapel; the c.1840 widening and heightening of that chapel and the closing off of the former transept entrances and the erection of a tower; and the 1920s nave construction and refurbishment with railwayimported limestone and Art Moderne detailing from wealth acquired from connections abroad. Fine bronze lectern and crucifix.
