About Aghadoe Church

Aghadoe Church in Aghadoe Heights, Co. Kerry.

Located on an eleveated site with stunning views of Killarney below, St. Finian the Leper founded a monastery here in the 7th century which was still in existence in 992 AD. The existing structure was mostly rebuilt in the 18th or 19th century however it incorporates the renmants of a much early church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity and Saint Mary, built by Amhlaoibh O'Donahue in 1158 and who was buried here in 1166.

There is a fine Romanesque doorway on the west and an elaborately carved 13th century window to the east. On the south wall there is a carved capital and crucifixion scene dating to the early 18th century. Also on the top of teh south wall is an ancient Ogham stone which may have been a grave marker.

It is worth visiting the site, even if only for the excellent views.
