About Abbeyshrule Cistercian Abbey

Abbeyshrule Cistercian Abbey in Abbeyshrule, Co. Longford.

Located in the valley of the River Inny, the Cistercian Abbey at Abbeyshrule was founded in 1150 by the O'Farrells shortly after the first foundation at Mellifont. It survived a fire in 1476 but was eventually closed by Queen Elizabeth I during the Tudor suppression of monasteries. The land was granted to Robert Dillon, Earl of Roscommon. The adjoining graveyard contains the shaft of the only surviving High Cross in Co. Longford.
