About Abbeyderg Monastery

Abbeyderg Monastery in Kenagh, Co. Longford.

This is the ruins of an Augustinian priory located in the grounds of Cemetery of Abbey Dearg. It was founded in the early 13th century, c. 1205, by Gormgall O'Quinn and dedicated to St. Peter. The remains of Maiolin O'Mulgonry, Chief Ollamh and poet of Ireland were buried here. The priory was destroyed in 1567 when it was suppressed and the buildings and land were bestowed on an English soldier named Nicholas Alymor.
