2. The High Cross in Clones, Co. Monaghan.

The High Cross belongs to the Ulster group of Scripture Crosses and dates from the 9th or 10th century.

It is a composite cross like many surviving High Crosses and comprises of at least two crosses, the shaft dating from the 9th or 10th century and the head from a later date.

Like a Biblical film story board, the cross shows scenes from both the Old and New Testaments. One side depicts Adam, the Tree and the Serpent, Abraham's Sacrifice of Isaac and Daniel in the Lions Den. The reverse side illustrates The Multiplication of the Loaves, the Miracle at Cana and the Adoration of the Magi.
